The name Ahmed Maher may not mean much to the average Iranian, but there is a direct link between the 25-year-old Egyptian engineer and the events of the last 48 hours in Iran. Maher was one of the organizers of the 80,000 people-strong rally in Cairo last April that also became know as "the bread riots." This protest was organized mainly through Facebook.

More than 1.5 million protesters took to the streets of Tehran on Monday, marking the largest anti-regime demonstration Iran has seen since the final days of the shah in early 1979.
Seven people were killed by anti-riot police and roving bands of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad supporters. Many of those supporters shielded their faces from surveillance videos that plainclothes police were shooting.

Within the Iranian Jewish community in particular, the belief remains that none of the candidates can be expected to effect real change in Iran — not the rabidly anti-Israel, Holocaust-denying Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, nor the so-called moderate candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

He was a student leader in the 1999 uprising, just one year after creating MPG.

WESTWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Many members of the large Iranian community in Los Angeles own businesses in Westwood.
Saturday's news of hard-line president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election came as a crushing blow for Iranians in the U.S. who voted against him.

As scores of expatriates showed up at a designated West Los Angeles polling station Friday to cast ballots in Iran's presidential election, a small group of demonstrators protested outside and denounced them for helping to legitimize "a fascist regime."
